Gia's journey has been influenced by the trailblazing transgender women who came before her, particularly the "Aunties" in her community who paved the way for greater acceptance and visibility. While she acknowledges the progress made in societal acceptance of transgender individuals, she emphasizes that there is still work to be done. Beyond the stage, Gia is passionate about fashion, drawing inspiration from designers like Versace and Dior. She believes in the power of inner beauty and strives to embody this in her daily life. Gia values love deeply, not only in romantic relationships but also in the bonds shared with friends and family. Looking ahead, Gia is committed to achieving her lifelong goals and continues to share her experiences to inspire and support the younger generation of transgender individuals.
Monika: Hello Gia! I have to say, it’s not every day I get the honor of meeting a queen, how exciting!
Gia: Aloha Monika! Darling, you look like a queen yourself. So let's call our meeting a royal party. I’m already feeling the fabulous energy in the air. Let’s make this a celebration to remember!
Monika: For those who don’t know you yet, could you tell us a little bit about yourself, where you're from and what shaped you?
Gia: Sure, I was born and raised on the windward side of Oahu in a city called Kaneohe, Hawaii. Growing up surrounded by natural beauty and Hawaiian culture had a big influence on my outlook and personality. The island spirit taught me to value community, self-expression, and a deep sense of aloha.
Monika: When did you first realize that performing on stage was your calling? Was there a particular moment or experience that sparked your passion?
Gia: My fascination with the stage began when I took a drama class in high school, and it became really clear that I wanted to be a showgirl when I saw my first drag show in a nightclub called Venus. The energy, the costumes, the confidence, it all just clicked for me. From that moment on, I knew that entertaining people was what I was born to do.
Monika: Could you share some of the venues and shows you've had the pleasure of performing in? Are there any that hold a special place in your heart?
Gia: I have done shows and many fundraisers and nightclubs such as Venus, which is now called Bar 7, and I am currently a showgirl at Fusion Waikiki (home of the two longest-running female impersonation shows in Hawaii). Performing at Fusion has been especially meaningful because of its rich legacy and vibrant community. Each stage has given me unforgettable memories and helped shape me into the performer I am today.
When Fusion Waikiki first opened its doors in 1989, it immediately became an essential part of Honolulu's LGBTQ+ scene. Back then, Hawaii’s LGBTQ+ community was still working toward greater visibility and acceptance, and Fusion was one of the few places where people could find comfort in being their true selves. The club quickly became more than just a bar, it became a home for anyone seeking to escape the pressures of a society that often marginalized them.
Located in the iconic Waikiki neighborhood, Fusion provides a welcoming, safe, and fun environment for the local LGBTQ+ community and visitors alike. The club's diverse crowd reflects Hawaii’s own melting pot of cultures, where locals and tourists, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, gather to enjoy live performances, drag shows, and a laid-back atmosphere filled with aloha spirit. For anyone visiting Honolulu, whether you’re a local or a tourist, Fusion Waikiki is an experience you won’t want to miss. In a world that often asks people to hide their true selves, Fusion stands as a bold reminder that being authentic, being proud, and embracing love in all its forms is always worth celebrating.
Monika: Have you ever considered exploring acting as another creative outlet? Maybe film, television, or even theater?
Gia: Yes, I have a few times. It’s definitely something that has crossed my mind, especially because I love storytelling and connecting with audiences. Who knows? One day you might just see me on the big screen or in a fabulous stage production!
Monika: You also compete in transgender beauty pageants, which is so exciting! Could you tell us a bit about the pageants you’ve participated in and the titles you’ve won?
Gia: I currently hold the title of National Showgirl Goddess 2013, which is a pageant held on the beautiful island of Maui. I am also a former Queen of Queens 2012, which is a pageant held here on Oahu. These pageants have given me a platform to express myself and celebrate my identity with pride. Winning those titles was not only an honor but also a powerful affirmation of my journey as a performer and a woman.
Monika: Being beautiful can be such a powerful source of confidence and empowerment. Do you find yourself tapping into that energy often in your daily life?
Gia: Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, and I believe that beauty on the inside is what counts most. I use that expression every day and everywhere I go. It's about radiating kindness, confidence, and authenticity. When you carry that inner beauty, it naturally shines through and empowers others too.
Monika: When you were transitioning, did you have any transgender role models or mentors who inspired or guided you? Was there anyone whose journey helped you feel less alone?
Gia: I definitely looked up to older generations such as my Aunties in the community who have paved our way so we can be who we are today. They were fierce, fearless, and full of wisdom, and they showed me what it meant to live authentically. Their courage and grace continue to inspire me every single day.
Monika: What would you say was the most challenging part of your coming out journey? Was there a particular relationship or moment that made it especially difficult?
Gia: The hardest thing about my coming out would have to be being accepted by my father. Gaining his understanding and support took time, and it was an emotional process for both of us.
Monika: How do you feel about the current situation of transgender women in American society? Do you think meaningful progress is being made?
Gia: I feel that transgender women have made a huge impact on society in general. I also feel that it is being accepted more nowadays, but there is no end, we still have a long way to go. Visibility has improved, and more stories are being told, but equality and safety are still not guaranteed. We must keep pushing forward, raising our voices, and supporting one another every step of the way.
Monika: These days, more and more transgender women are stepping into the spotlight. Unlike in the past, some are achieving celebrity status, like Lana Wachowski in film, Jenna Talackova in modeling, Kate Bornstein in academia, Laura Jane Grace in music, and Candis Cayne in acting. Have you noticed this trend as well?
Gia: Definitely. It's inspiring to see trans women gaining recognition in so many different fields and being celebrated for their talents. Their visibility helps pave the way for younger generations to dream bigger and live more openly.
Monika: Do you think transgender rights could be considered the next frontier in the broader human rights movement? Are we moving toward a more inclusive understanding of equality?
Gia: I feel that it’s a huge step towards it. Transgender rights are about recognizing the dignity and humanity of people who have long been marginalized. As society evolves, embracing gender diversity is essential to achieving true equality for all. The progress we’ve seen in recent years has been inspiring, but there is still much work to do. We need to continue advocating for policy changes, healthcare access, and social acceptance. Transgender people deserve the same rights and respect as anyone else, and it's crucial for everyone to understand that we’re all just humans seeking love, respect, and happiness. By supporting transgender rights, we’re pushing society closer to a future where no one has to fight for their basic dignity.
Monika: Are you involved in politics or any lobbying efforts for transgender rights? Do you believe transgender women can have a meaningful impact in political spaces?
Gia: I try to keep up, especially with issues that face or involve our community, and I feel strongly that trans women and men can definitely make a difference in politics. Our voices bring unique perspectives that are often missing from the conversation. With more representation, we can help shape policies that truly reflect the needs of our community. Transgender people have been at the forefront of social justice movements for years, and our input is essential in ensuring that laws and systems work for everyone. It’s vital that transgender individuals are included in the political decision-making process, from local government to national policies. By advocating for our rights, we are also helping to challenge outdated and harmful systems that have marginalized not just us, but other groups as well. The more visibility we have in politics, the closer we get to a world where all voices are heard, and equality is not just a concept but a reality.
Monika: Could you share your thoughts on the role love plays in your life? How has love, whether romantic, familial, or platonic, shaped your journey?
Gia: Love is important to me not only relationship-wise, but love from your friends and family as well. Love is what we all need. It gives us strength, reminds us that we’re not alone, and helps us stay grounded. I feel truly blessed to have people in my life who love and support me unconditionally.
Monika: Are you passionate about fashion? What styles or outfits do you typically enjoy wearing, and do you have any favorite colors, trends, or designers?
Gia: I love fashion!! As far as what I wear, I like to be versatile in fashion as well as creative. Versace and Dior are a few of my favorite designers. Fashion allows me to express different sides of myself and set the mood for how I want to feel each day. Whether it's glam, edgy, or classic, I dress to reflect my energy and personality.
Monika: Many transgender women have been sharing their journeys through memoirs. Have you ever considered writing a book about your own life and experiences?
Gia: Honestly I haven’t thought about writing a book, but I love to share my stories and experiences, especially to help the younger generation yet to come. There’s so much power in storytelling, and I believe our voices can inspire and guide others. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll put pen to paper and share it all in a book.
Monika: What’s the next step on your journey right now, and where do you envision yourself in the next five to seven years? Are there any dreams or goals you’re especially focused on?
Gia: My next step in life is to achieve my lifelong goal, which is to go back to school for aviation. I want to be a pilot. I have always been fascinated with airplanes. Flying represents freedom and adventure to me, and I’ve always wanted to see the world from above. It’s a dream that I’m determined to make a reality.
Monika: What advice would you give to transgender women who are considering a career in entertainment? Are there any key lessons you’ve learned along the way that you think would be helpful for them?
Gia: My advice would be to always remember that if entertaining is what makes you happy and is your passion, then don’t let anyone or anything get in the way of your passion. You can do anything you put your mind to. Also, don’t look at it as just a job, entertaining is a hobby or passion, and you should always know your worth. Stay true to yourself and never compromise on who you are for the sake of success. The more authentic you are, the more your audience will connect with you.
Monika: Gia, thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me today! It’s been a pleasure hearing your story.
Gia: Thank you, Monika, for this opportunity. I am really honored to be a part of your interview! It was a pleasure sharing my experiences with you, and I hope it resonates with others. I look forward to following your work and staying connected!
