Interview with Kayla Ward: Update

Kayla

When I first interviewed Kayla Ward in December 2013, she was already a rising voice in the transgender community, known for her honesty and warmth as she documented her transition on YouTube. Eighteen months later, she has transformed from an inspiring vlogger into a confident and graceful model, now based in Dallas, Texas. Kayla’s journey has continued to evolve in remarkable ways as she steps further into the world of fashion and entertainment, pursuing her dreams with the same determination and authenticity that first captivated her followers. Her story reflects both personal growth and professional ambition, showing how courage and self-belief can turn aspiration into reality. In this follow-up interview, Kayla talks about her modeling career, her experiences in the fashion world, and the lessons she has learned along the way while continuing to embody beauty, grace, and resilience.

Since moving to Dallas, Kayla has embraced new opportunities that have allowed her to express her creativity and confidence in front of the camera. From walking in local fashion shows to collaborating with talented designers and photographers, she continues to grow as both a model and an artist. Her love of fashion shines through in every photo, whether she is wearing elegant dresses, bold couture, or classic lingerie. Despite her success, Kayla remains grounded and humble, always eager to learn and refine her craft. What makes her stand out is not only her beauty but also her sincerity and quiet determination to represent transgender women with pride and authenticity. Her journey is a beautiful reminder that self-discovery never stops and that dreams are always worth chasing.

Monika: Hello Kayla! It has been 18 months since our first conversation, and it is wonderful to speak with you again. How would you describe the biggest changes in your life during this time?
Kayla: I moved to Dallas, Texas, and began chasing my dreams of modeling and acting. The move was a big step, but it opened so many doors for me both personally and professionally. I’ve met inspiring people who have helped me grow and encouraged me to keep pushing forward. Every day feels like a new chance to create something beautiful and to continue becoming the woman I’ve always wanted to be.

Monika: You look absolutely stunning, Kayla! How do you maintain your appearance and take care of yourself despite such a busy lifestyle?
Kayla: Luck with genetics is about the only answer I can honestly give. I’d like to say it is due to eating healthy, consistent workouts, and always getting enough sleep, but that doesn’t happen like it should. I do try to stay hydrated, take care of my skin, and keep a positive mindset because confidence plays a huge role in beauty. I also think surrounding yourself with people who make you feel good about yourself helps you glow from the inside out.
Monika: You have blossomed into such a beautiful and confident woman. What emotions come with stepping into the world of modeling and being admired for your beauty?
Kayla: I feel very blessed to do what I do. I actually struggle with confidence, so I don’t quite see what everyone else does, but all of the support and encouragement really do help a lot. Modeling has taught me to appreciate myself in ways I never did before and to see beauty as something that comes from authenticity. Every shoot gives me a chance to express a different side of myself, and I’m learning to embrace that with pride and gratitude.
Monika: How did your journey into the modeling world begin, and what inspired you to take that first step?
Kayla: I started modeling by walking in a few fashion shows for a dear friend and designer, Raul Torres. It was a wonderful introduction to the industry and helped me build confidence on the runway. Raul believed in me from the start, and that support made a huge difference. From that moment on, I realized how much I loved being part of the creative energy that surrounds fashion.
Monika: Fashion is all about inspiration and creativity. Which designers or brands have captured your admiration and made you dream of working with them?
Kayla: I don’t really have a favorite, but I would love to model for Guess and Paul Marciano. Their campaigns have always stood out to me for their mix of sophistication and sexiness. I can imagine myself being part of that glamorous world one day. I also appreciate designers who value diversity and see beauty in all its different forms.
Monika: The fashion world is slowly becoming more inclusive. Why do you think transgender women are beginning to gain more visibility and recognition in this industry?
Kayla: I wouldn’t say there is a great interest in transgender individuals in the fashion industry yet. There should be, and there will be more as we continue to break down barriers. The world is changing, and people are starting to realize that beauty is not limited to one type of person. I believe that as more trans models find success, they will inspire others to dream big and claim their place in fashion.

Monika: Could you share a bit more about your favorite fashion experiences and the shows that have meant the most to you?
Kayla: I have only had the chance to walk in some shows in Dallas for local designers, but the one that means the most to me is Raul Torres. He gave me my first opportunity and helped me believe in my potential as a model. Every show has taught me something new about poise, presentation, and self-expression. I’m grateful for each experience because it brings me one step closer to my bigger dreams.
Monika: One of your photo shoots in Abilene stood out for its sensual imagery. How would you describe that experience and the concept behind it?
Kayla: I wouldn’t call it sensual. The photographer I shot with there is a great fashion photographer. We focused primarily on getting some editorial shots and also did a little glamour as well. It was a creative and professional atmosphere, and I loved how the images captured both strength and softness in different ways.
Monika: During one of your photo shoots, you had the opportunity to wear a Victoria’s Secret dress for the first time. How did it feel to step into that iconic piece?
Kayla: I was just happy I finally got to put that dress to use. It felt exciting to wear something so recognizable and glamorous. The experience made me appreciate the craftsmanship and design that goes into such iconic fashion pieces. It also gave me a little boost of confidence, knowing I could carry it with poise and style.
Monika: You once mentioned applying for a role on the soap opera Bold and the Beautiful. Were you able to move forward with the audition process, and what was the outcome?
Kayla: I never got to audition. I saw the posting for the show, but they didn’t have open auditions for it. It was a bit disappointing because I was really excited about the opportunity. However, it motivated me to keep looking for other acting roles and to continue improving my skills. I learned that persistence and patience are key in the entertainment industry.

Monika: One of my favorite photo shoots of yours is the one where you wore a violet dress and styled your hair in curls. How did you feel during that shoot, and what made it special for you?
Kayla: Thank you, it was a fun shoot! I really enjoyed experimenting with the curls and seeing how they added movement and character to the photos. The violet dress made me feel elegant and confident, and the team we worked with was fantastic, which made the experience even more enjoyable. It reminded me how much I love being part of creative projects where fashion and personality come together.
Monika: How often do you like to change your hairstyles, and how does your hair reflect your personal style?
Kayla: Unfortunately, I am not good at styling my own hair, so I rely on having it changed up if I shoot with a team and have someone work on my hair. It’s always exciting to see new looks and how different styles can completely transform a photo. I enjoy seeing how my hair can complement outfits and add to the overall story of a shoot. Whenever I get the chance to experiment, it feels like a small adventure in creativity and self-expression.
Monika: You seem comfortable in all types of photo shoots, including lingerie. How do you approach shoots that challenge you to show different sides of yourself?
Kayla: I’m not really afraid of any type of shoot. It is just as fun wearing a full-on men’s suit as it is wearing lingerie. They all allow you to be a different person and show a different personality. Each shoot is an opportunity to explore new moods, poses, and emotions. I love the challenge of bringing energy and authenticity to every look, and it keeps my work exciting and fresh.
Monika: Would you ever consider posing nude for a men’s magazine, or do you prefer other types of modeling work?
Kayla: I wouldn’t be interested in posing nude, but I wouldn’t say no to posing in lingerie or doing implied shots for a men’s magazine. Lingerie shoots allow me to express confidence and elegance without crossing my personal boundaries. I enjoy the challenge of conveying mood and personality through clothing and poses. Every shoot is a chance to explore new aspects of modeling and creativity.
Monika: Some of my favorite shoots are your work outfits. How do you choose what to wear in those photos, and what do you enjoy about them?
Kayla: Thanks! I get bored at work and like to show what I’m wearing. It’s a fun way to inject some personality into my day and share my style with others. Choosing outfits for work photos allows me to experiment with different looks and combinations. I also enjoy seeing how small changes in accessories or color can completely transform a photo.

Monika: High heels are a signature in many of your photos. How do they enhance your modeling, and do you enjoy wearing them?
Kayla: They are actually more comfortable for me to wear due to my high arches. They also help create different lines for your body and improve posture in pictures. Wearing heels makes me feel elegant and confident, which comes across in photos. I appreciate how shoes can transform an outfit and give a polished finish to every look.
Monika: You participate in a lot of photoshoots. How challenging is it to pose effectively for fashion photography?
Kayla: It is very difficult! I’m still learning and taking advice as I work with each photographer. Every shoot is a learning experience, teaching me new ways to pose, express emotion, and use my body creatively. The more I practice, the more comfortable and confident I become in front of the camera. I also enjoy observing the techniques photographers use and adapting them to improve my performance.
Monika: Do you have any favorite photographers you enjoy working with, and what makes those collaborations special?
Kayla: I enjoy working with them all but have had a few favorites due to their ability. There are also many I can’t wait to work with one day once I move out of Dallas. Working with talented photographers makes each shoot inspiring and pushes me to improve. I learn new angles, lighting techniques, and posing strategies from every collaboration. Those experiences help me grow both as a model and as a creative partner.
Monika: In your opinion, what is the key to a successful collaboration between a model and a photographer?
Kayla: Flexibility, humility, and listening. Being open to feedback and trusting the photographer’s vision is crucial. Communication is also important to ensure the outcome matches both the model’s and the photographer’s goals. A positive attitude and willingness to experiment can turn every shoot into a great experience.
Monika: What advice would you give to transgender girls who dream of becoming models?
Kayla: It definitely isn’t easy and requires a lot of work. You have to study and practice by looking through magazines and sitting in front of a mirror. Patience and persistence are key because building a modeling career takes time and effort. Surrounding yourself with supportive people and learning from each experience will help you grow. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your unique beauty every step of the way.
Monika: Kayla, thank you so much for taking the time to speak with me today!
Kayla: Thank you! I really enjoyed sharing my experiences and hope it inspires others to follow their dreams.
