Interview with Barbara Herr

Barbara Herr is a transgender woman, actress, cabaret artist, showgirl and activist whose remarkable life spans more than five decades of LGBTQ+ performance history. Born Robert Hernández in the Bronx, New York, in 1955 to Puerto Rican and Cuban immigrant parents, she grew up between New York and Puerto Rico, an experience that would shape both her identity and her extraordinary artistic career. Barbara moved to Puerto Rico as a teenager and began performing in 1973 under the name Bobby Herr. During the 1970s and 1980s, she became part of the island's vibrant world of drag, cabaret and nightclub entertainment, performing in venues such as Bachelor in Santurce and Stars in Condado. She also worked in theatre and television and toured with a revue connected with the legendary Héctor Del San Juand and Ed Vachan. Later, she toured the Caribbean as a solo artist, headlining her own show during hotel residencies in the Dominican Republic. Two important figures helped shape her artistic life. Antonio Pantojas, one of Puerto Rico's most celebrated entertainers, became her mentor, teacher and close friend, while the legendary Lady Catiria became an important artistic influence. Through them and many other performers of her generation, Barbara became part of a rich Puerto Rican and Nuyorican tradition of transgender and drag performance that has only recently begun to receive the historical recognition it deserves.

Interview with Jennifer Cobian

Monika: Today I am going to chat with Jennifer Cobian, a Puerto Rican-born beauty expert, make-up artist, model, and transgender woman from Miami, Florida, that shares her transition story on social media. Hello Jennifer!
Jennifer: Hello Monika! Thank you for having me here. I'm honored to be included in this platform that showcases amazing trans women from around the world.
Monika: Could you say a few words about yourself?
Jennifer: Well, I’m from Puerto Rico, and I had to relocate to Miami after a major hurricane destroyed almost everything in the island in 2017. I enjoy going to Disney, collecting Barbie memorabilia, and wearing designer shoes.
I am still single! If any gentleman reading wants to take me out ;)
Monika: What are your favourite pieces in your Barbie collection?
Jennifer: Oh wow that’s a tough question because I love so many of them! But if I could narrow it down to three I’d say. I love the Blond Diamond doll by the Blonds, the 50th Anniversary Barbie and the MAC Barbie Doll, it was my first ever collector doll and it started the whole craze.

Interview with Maria Roman

Maria Roman's journey has taken her through extraordinary highs and devastating lows, from a difficult childhood in Puerto Rico and years of rejection, homelessness, and discrimination to the bright lights of beauty pageants, television, film, and transgender activism. A model, actress, pageant queen, advocate, and one of the most recognisable transgender personalities of her generation, Maria has never been afraid to stand tall, quite literally and figuratively. Her story is one of survival, determination, and the long, sometimes painful journey towards self-acceptance. Along the way, she has challenged conventional ideas of beauty, spoken openly about violence and discrimination against transgender people, and used her visibility to advocate for those whose voices are too often ignored.

Maria does not pretend that becoming comfortable in her own skin happened overnight. After years of chasing an ideal of beauty and acceptance, she eventually discovered something far more valuable: peace with herself and the freedom to embrace her womanhood on her own terms. In this interview, Maria talks about beauty pageants, childhood, transition, love and marriage, her experiences in television and film, transgender visibility, politics, violence, and the meaning of happiness. Above all, hers is a story about learning that being a woman is not about fitting into someone else's expectations, but about finally finding the courage to love the woman you have always been. It is my great pleasure to introduce Maria Roman, a woman of remarkable strength, beauty, warmth, and resilience.
